13th Game [video]
[There's a bashful look on her face when she opens the journal. It's been a whole day now, a whole day since she returned from her kidnapping. Since she had discovered Prim had arrived in her absence, since she had gotten to once again spend the whole day and night in the company of her sister. It had been amazing. A dream that she had never thought possible. Prim was dead and yet... yet, for whatever reason, she had been brought here.
Perhaps she should have alerted those outside of her household that she had returned. But all she had wanted for that one day was to spend it alongside Prim. To tell her everything that had happened in the months - year - following her death. To tell her about Commander Paylor and the new government of Panem. To tell her of all those she had met here, of Peeta and Richard, Teddy and Sokka and Zevran and Rapunzel. It had been the wee hours of the night by the time she had gone to bed.
But sometime in the mid-morning, she remembers promises she had made. To the man who had helped her in learning how to get her voice back. To the boy who was now suffering from a death penalty of his own. She had promised them both a song. And it seems now like such a small price to pay to gaining not one, but two, important parts of her life back.
She ducks her head for a second, fingers playing with the buttons and beads on the handmade necklace Sokka made her. And then she clears her throat and begins to sing with a voice that, as Peeta once claimed, would silence the birds:]
As I look at the valleys down below
They are green just as far as I can see
As my memories return, oh how my heart did yearn
For you and the days that used to be
High on a mountain top, standing all alone
Wondering where the years of my life have flown
High on a mountaintop, wind blowing free
Thinking about the days that used to be
Well, I wonder if you ever think of me
Or has time erased your memory
As I listen to the breeze whisper gently through the trees
I wonder if you ever think of me
High on a mountain top, standing all alone
Wondering where the years of my life have flown
High on a mountaintop, wind blowing free
Thinking about the days that used to be
High on a mountain top, standing all alone
Wondering where the years of my life have flown
High on a mountaintop, wind blowing free
Thinking about the days that used to be
High on a mountain top
Thinking about the days that used to be
And I wonder if you ever think of me
[When she's done singing, she smiles sheepishly and shrugs.] I promised a song to a few people. I hope you enjoyed it.
[She opens her mouth a second later to say something more. And then she pauses and, for once, actually takes the time to construct a filter. To make certain that Prim cannot see what follows. Because even though Katniss' own birthday is only a few days away, she's not thinking of that day very much. It pales in comparison to a much more important day approaching at the end of the month.]
Does anyone have much experience throwing birthday parties? My sister - Prim - she's here now. And her birthday's in a few weeks. We could never afford a proper celebration growing up. I'd like to give her that. Give her everything that she couldn't have back home. [She frowns for a moment, brow wrinkling in thought.] I also need to build an addition to my house. Where'd I go about getting the material for that?
[ooc: for those interested in what the song might sound like. though this isn't exactly how i picture katniss' voice. nor does she have musical accompaniment in this post.]

Your voice, love. It's like nothing else I've heard. [ he announces his presence minutes later -- a low rumble of his voice. ]
[ action -- of course it's alright. ]
But she does still, for a moment, almost regret the decision. An audience on the journal - through the camera - was one thing. But in person? She blushes a little and ducks her head, but not before offing him a pleased smile.]

nothing:
But she still plays the first part. Listens to the girl sing, lets the melody float around her at the camp. It hurts, somehow. Hearing her sing like that. Knowing that, according to Sharpe, she hadn't been able to sing since she died. Knowing that was what her actions had taken away. And there's an undeniable emotion that wrenches Clove, even if she can't explain it.
Of the voice, of the words, of everything. She can't name it, but it's there.
Clove wipes her eyes furiously and slams the journal shut without replying, hugging her knees to her as she stares at the rabbit cooking over the fire. She shouldn't have listened to that. She's paid the price for her curiosity. She knows too well that she won't get that voice singing that song out of her head for days. At least.]

[voice; same filter]
Still, Pepper had seen Prim's entry, wherein the girl had been equally concerned about the elder sister's birthday. And it's impossible not to want to say something, given the happiness that's clear in Katniss's song, and her questions.]
I can offer some advice, if you'd like. I've planned a few parties before. [Although her experience probably runs toward much more formal affairs than Katniss has in mind, some of the basics remain the same.] Your song was beautiful, by the way.
[voice; same filter]
But she quickly dismisses all of that. Because the advice is important. Necessary. Prim deserves the best party possible. One that might even eclipse Rapunzel's lanterns.]
You can? [There's an eager look in her eyes, not much unlike the smile still on her face. A smile that widens upon the compliment.] Thank you.

[Effie approves. This, at least, is a gentle art.]
Very rustic.

But the smile quickly fades at the second part of Effie's response. And, for the first time since Prim's arrival, she finds herself scowling.]

She takes a moment to compose herself before she opens a channel, unsure Katniss would want to hear from her, uncertain if things would be... awkward, after the last time they saw one another. What they'd thought of each other. But she can't not say anything, even if she isn't sure it'll be welcomed.
So she just leaves a short reply, trying her best to hide her hesitation behind a crooked smile.]
That was beautiful, Katniss. I... I had no idea you could sing like that. It was really pretty. And... And I'm glad you're back. And that you're okay.
Because while the life the Malnosso had created for them had been far from ideal, they had had each other. She had gotten to remember what it had been like to have a sister again. And how much the role of older sister meant to her. Did it mean the same to Artemis?
She's not sure. Not even certain how to ask. Instead, she just smiles her gratitude at the compliment.]
I've been singing since I was little. But I couldn't. Not for the past few months. [It's uncomfortable, having to explain matters still. Delve towards emotions she'd much rather ignore. But, she owes Artemis, doesn't she?] I died. And right before the shift, I asked for my penalty to be removed. I didn't realize- I mean, I'm sorry. If I worried you.

Your sister...did she just arrive here? Have you been here for a while?
But at the same time, it's not perfect. It's a game. Luceti's a game with the Malnosso as their Gamemakers. There are shifts - hijacks - and drafts. Drafts where children can die. Where, potentially, her sister can die all over again.]
She arrived while I was gone. [Because that much is evident from the journals. All this girl has to do is look up Prim's entry.] And I've been here for a year.

You have a beautiful voice. [ She pauses. ] You seem to be doing much better than when we last spoke.

She smiles at the compliment. But while Katniss is, indeed, happier than she's been in some time, she's still Katniss. Still wary of trusting women she doesn't really know.]
I am.

Oh yup, his smile is big and great right now. Just hearing her voice meant that her penalty was gone. That she was okay now. He can even feel that it sounds like Katniss is finally sounding happy.
But, after that thought passes he just closes his eyes and listens.
When she finally finishes, he claps.]
That was great, Katniss!
Video
But she'll still try regardless. For Henry and Prim both. Both are, in her opinion, still in need of protection. Even if both are more than capable of taking care of themselves.]
Thank you. I hope you liked it, Henry.

Do you still wish all your memories were gone?

A lot had happened in the time between.]
Sometimes.
[The answer is surprisingly honest. But in the time since, she's found other ways to keep herself occupied. Between having housemates - one invited, one not so much - and drafts and even finding physical comfort in a friend, she hasn't had nearly as much time to dwell. She missed Peeta, missed him horribly. Missed him to the degree that she had promised herself not to make the mistake of falling for anyone again. But there was enough else to think on.
And now, a sister to the mix.]
But it's not a chance I'm willing to take anymore. It's safer to just never make that mistake again.

Prim's arrival, in a way, had just sealed that fact.

Could you bake a cake? A big one, maybe, with multiple tiers? I know there's no money here, but I can barter something for it. [Her hand goes to Sokka's necklace for a moment, contemplating. She doesn't have much of value, but...] I could provide you with game for a while.
