He hates those nights as well. They're hard to work through and they make him question everything. There has never been a night like that in which she hasn't helped. Before they'd gotten close, she was a personal reminder that he could make a difference, that he could save people. Once they'd gotten closer, she'd become a refuge, a place that wasn't affected by all of the problems he dealt with professionally and otherwise. Now, she's become something more than that. He wouldn't be training her and letting her go out with him if she didn't believe in his crusade. Some nights he thinks it's the only thing that keeps him fighting.
Matt wants to be that person. He's one of the people who became a lawyer for all the 'right' reasons rather than for money. He's not ready to trade that sincerity and chance to really help for security or anything else. He and Foggy had worked for a big partnership and they'd realized it wasn't for them because they were honest and because they wanted to make a difference. It would be easier if Matt wasn't a human lie detector. He wants her to fly and be independent, but he doesn't want her to fly far. He likes the life they've built together so he's glad that Hell's Kitchen has become home.
The best things are priceless or worth so much that they might as well be priceless. Matt has never had any money so maybe that's part of why he hasn't ever tried to buy her. The only thing he has to offer is himself and Katniss has been so accepting of that. She accepts the good and the bad and makes him feel like he's worth everything. She is a gift as far as he's concerned.
Perhaps, but he wishes that she hadn't had to go through that pain. He wishes that he could change the bad things for her or wipe them away. A soft, contented smile curves his mouth. He takes a deep breath, feeling her weight against him, feeling her heart thrum against his ribcage. She's warm against him and soft. He curls his arm around her, pulling her a little tighter against him. The moment doesn't last long enough, but she's right that they should get back to business. He groans at her words and takes a breath to argue with her. Instead, he ends up holding that breath a moment, holding his words. He presses his lips together, listens to her heart a moment then exhales. "Okay, but let's go back to the house. I can change and I've got a present for you."

He's had her own armored suit made for her.
