[Once Clove was inside, she let the door fall close behind them. Awkwardly, Katniss walked over to one of the walls so she could lean against it. The brief action kept her busy for all of five seconds. But it was still five seconds that she didn't have to speak. Didn't have to say anything or ask why Clove was here. She should. She knew that. That it was the polite thing to do, the whole reason that she had come over in the first place.

But... she was afraid. Afraid that the moment she started talking, she'd tell Clove everything that had happened to her recently. List her own mistakes as reasons why Clove shouldn't be taking any stupid, reckless chances.

And then hate herself for it later.]

I want to get married.

[Five words. Four of them very short. And yet she forces them out like they're poison. It's the first time she's said it. Why she was so cagey with everyone on her address to the community. Why she wouldn't risk saying it over the Journals.

She shoves the words out of her mouth and doesn't look at her fellow tribute, breathing hard, as if that had taken all the air she had and more besides.]

The word rings through Katniss' ears and she can't bring herself to even look in Clove's direction, let alone speak. Married. Tying one's life to another. One step more towards forming your own family, towards having kids that... No, they wouldn't grow up to be in the Hunger Games here. But a full life here wasn't guaranteed. There were still consequences.

So many consequences.]
