2nd Game [action + voice]
[The rain has finally stopped. It comes as such a relief to Katniss, that she slips out of the treehouse village with her bow and arrows and hunting bag so very early in the morning - earlier than she's been awake in days.
It's been a whole day of exploring the woods. Gathering edible plants and resetting snares that were damaged by the storm. And just wandering. Wandering amongst the trees, sometimes climbing up one to get a better look of the area. Here, by the edge of the lake, she feels far enough from the town that she might actually be safe.
Safer, at least, than in those past few days. Maybe she spent too much time in the treehouse after that gathering. Too much time alone with memories and thoughts that made her heartsick. Nightmares that here, something will happen to Rue, something she won't be able to stop - just like she couldn't stop that District 1 boy from spearing her in arena. Lost days that she tried to hide so she wouldn't worry Rue.
But today? Today she almost feels like herself. Especially after a whole morning's and afternoon's worth of hunting and gathering. If you've been in the forest near the western lake today, there's a chance you might have run into her.
Maybe she hasn't been as successful as she's been in the past, but her bag still speaks of some results. A wild turkey she shot early afternoon, herbs and roots gathered not too far from the lake, and a couple of small squirrels from her snares. They weigh her down and she considers returning to the treehouses, but she doesn't want to leave the sanctuary of the forest. Not yet.
A flash of yellow catches her eye and she turns, arrow notched in it's string. And then it meows, indignant, and her arrow flies to land in the dirt right next to the beast.
She stares. And scowls.
A while later, she's back in her treehouse room and glaring at the stupid creature that followed her home. Of everyone to find here from District 12, of course it has to be Buttercup.
She reaches for the journal to ask a question.]
Has anyone else here found a pet from home?

You seem like you've been living outside for a while now--or at least, you've been a big hunter for a while. Not to mention, you handle that bow like a pro. [he nods to it.] I don't see a lot of archers; they're typically involved in sports where I'm from.
[action]
I like to hunt. Means you always have fresh meat.
[And growing up, illegally caught game was all her family really could afford.]
[action]
[He watches her removing the scales with his knuckle balancing his temple. It's a familiar process, descaling. But it's familiar in the way that a 1970's video is fuzzy and lost, nestled down in the rest of the decades.
He's not sure why he'd always thrown back the fish. Maybe it's because he'd always had food at home. And considering this, he imagines Katniss had no such luxury.]
Used to go out to the creek with my father and his brothers. He didn't let me shoot a gun until I was a teenager, though. Said he didn't like the look of it.
[The old man go used to it after he'd signed up for the army, at least.]
[action]
I've never used a gun.
[All weapons were considered illegal, unless you were a Peacekeeper. Even the bows she and her father used, then she and Gale, had to stay safely hidden in the forest.]
[action]
[He looks over the lake, scanning along the surface.]
I've been a soldier for half my life, so seeing most of the weapons around here aren't guns has been a pretty... weird experience. Then again, there are plenty of odd things around here.
[and he goes back to watching the fish]
Hell, sometimes I wonder if I'm really here or not, sometimes. After you see talking animals and superheroes, you start having doubts.
[action]
It wasn't allowed. No weapons were, unless you were a Peacekeeper.
[It might be different now. At least she doesn't have to hide her bows and arrows any more. That was nice.
The fish head is severed and she starts to pull out the guts. There's no grimace on her face, no real emotion. She's done this a thousand times. Why would this one be any different?]
This feels real.
[action]
Yeah... I guess it does.
[He motions to the fish.]
Hungry? You can take that one, if you want. Technically, you're the one who nailed it and cleaned it.
[Besides, he's got two more little guys to practice on.]
[action]
I can take that instead. The meat keeps longer.
[And it'll go better with some of the roots she gathered. It'll be a good meal tonight, for her and Rue.]
[action]
[When he says that, he means it. Spaghettios and Top Ramen 4 life.]
[action]
As she finishes up with prepping the fish, she gives him a grin.]
Thanks.
[action]
Over all, not too shabby of a meeting. Even if he was almost arrow'ed.]
No problem.
