[The apology is supposed to mean something, she knows. It sounds like it means something to in the way he says it, the way he looks in that small accompanying photograph. She’s never had many of apologies in her life, not since her father’s death. The words had been hollow then, a way for the others in the Seam to feel as if they could help the grieving family. But the words hadn’t put bread on the table, hadn’t knocked her mother out of her depressed daze.

Maybe she’s not all that unlike her mother after all. It’s an uncomfortable conclusion to reach. But much like her mother, the words mean little to her. Things turn around for the better. Things won’t get better. Not for Katniss Everdeen.

Still, she can’t bring herself to brush off the words entirely. Not when they’re so similar to those said by someone she would have listened to if he was still here. And so she does mean it when she responds:]
